Inprotrans Pty Ltd is the best place to start with your South Australian Railway research

What can I find at Inprotrans?
We hold about 200,000 technical drawings of the former South Australian Railway, Commonwealth Railway and Australian National Railway. In our collection you will find over 2000 rolling stock diagrams giving you side and plan views of most vehicles that ran on South Australian tracks. These diagrams are ideal for building models. For the more ambitious builders we also hold most of the construction drawings for the vehicles giving you enough detail to build or maintain actual rolling stock and locomotives.

In addition to railway vehicles you will also find drawings of station yards, railway buildings and other infrastructure, including signal and track components, bridges and culverts, curve and gradient diagrams and just about any other detail that would have required a technical drawing to build.

We maintain a vast library of index cards, drawing registers and databases that cover over 150 years of rail history. If we can’t help you find the drawings you require in our collection we can often give you the information you need to take to the State or National Archives.

At Inprotrans Pty Ltd we help give you the skills you need to carry out your own investigations. The many record systems used over the years can be a bit daunting but with a little guidance we can point you in the right direction. Many people have taken advantage of our research facilities.
The consensus is that the hunt is a lot of fun andoften very rewarding.

What Inprotrans can do for me?
Once you have found what you want, we can provide you with a print using our high quality, wide format laser printer. We can produce prints of up to 841mm or 33” wide and over 6 metres or 20’ long. If you prefer, we can also produce an electronic copy of most drawings, for delivery via email, or copied to portable media. If your copy is for the wall or is to be used in the workshop we can protect it with either gloss or matte high quality laminate.

If you are using CAD design software in your project we can also produce prints in black & white or colour directly from AutoCAD or from your provided PDF file. If you need help to get your file ready for printing you can send us a note, or give us a call, and we will happily assist.
What else can Inprotrans do?
We also have a selection of framed high quality railway photo prints available for purchase. If you have your own favorite drawing or photo we can create a framed copy in any size.
At Inprotrans, we are keen to help, so if in doubt just send us an e-mail and we will let you know what we can do to help.

Current Projects
We are currently scanning and converting many of the hard copy index systems to PDF form. Soon our free online research facility will allow you to investigate 150 years of South Australian rail drawings from the comfort of your own home. As the index systems are quite complicated we will be adding some hints and tips on how to get the most from the available data. From the index information you can not only find drawing numbers, but build a history of development and change in rail within South Australia as well.
